Face saving opportunity for Zardari

As we all know that Mr.Zardari became President of Pakistan due to circumstances. He clearly lacks rational decision making and more seriously to be commander-in-chief of an atomic power. His tenure till now has shown mere promises and then backing out of the publicly made committments with other stakeholders. To name a few are his committments towards Charter of Democracy, Bhurban declaration and Islamabad Accord.

He is reluctant to relinquish his presidential powers bestowed in his position through 58 (2) B, 17th ammendment and many others. He committed in his first speech in parliament that will will give these powers back to the parliament. Till now he hasn't fulfilled his commitments in this regard.

He being a Head of State of an Islamic country has to make sure that he never fails on his committments. Both Pakistanis and foreign countries see him as a person who cannot be trusted. At the moment he is the most cursed and disliked person in Pakistan. He do have support in province of Sindh where his ally MQM is supporting him due to their lust for back door influence in politics. Altaf Hussain's and Zardari's background is tarred with criminal activities known to the people of Pakistan.

Zardari's recent fiasco is imposition of Governor's rule in the largest province of Punjab and continued support to a Governor whose conversation is not even being discussed at any forum. Governor Taseer has ignited and damaged the poltical stability of this province in particular and of the whole country in general. He has his own agenda and is supported by Zardari's camp with out any consideration for democracy and integrity of the country.

A recent public slap came on Zardari's face from his own Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani. PM advised President Zardari at floor of the National Assembly of Pakistan to withdraw the "Mobile Courts Ordinance" promulgated by President to curb fortcoming "sit-in"and political rallies by the opposition parties for restoration of Mr. Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudary as Chief Justice of Pakistan.

Zardari downfall is imminent. Its a matter of time that he will be ousted by the political forces. He is incapable to comprehend the ground realities and has shown his fantasies towards USA. This must be noted that late Behnazir Bhutto kept Zaradri out of political affairs and he was never involved in the political struggle. She was aware that it was Zardari whose greed and corruption brought her government down and she had to face all these hardships.

Nevertheless, Zardari can have a face saving exit through following steps:

a. Relinquish 58(2)B powers and transfers all such powers to the Prime Minister who is
answerable to the nation through parliament;

b. At once remove Suleman Taseer as Governor of Punjab;

c. Withdraw 17th amendment from the constitution and charge ex dictator General
Musharaf for treason and breaking the constitution. Article 6 of Constitution demands this
from the President.

d. Get out of insane war on terror and stop killing Pakistani people in FATA and Swat.

e. Restore Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudary as Chief Justice of Pakistan.

Though zardari has become symbol of hatred in Pakistan in a very short span and he has lost confidence of the people of Pakistan. It will be for the good of the country that a mentally unstable person is replaced by a political intellectual for this highest office. Moreover, there are clear rifts among the ranks and files of his own party PPP towards his policies and actions. Time is ticking fast for President Zardari to decide for his own future. Certainly he would not like to be bracketed with dictators - though their is only one difference between him and ex dictators i.e uniform.

  1. People in street say that Zardari doesn't deserve a face saving. He ought to go in a disgraceful way as he broke his promises and committments.
